Homemade Apple Cider Recipe
- 12 cups of water
- 10 apples of the sweet variety (Fuji or Gala apples are great choices)
- 7 cinnamon sticks
- 1 orange
- 1/2 cup of maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon of whole all spice
- 1 tablespoon of whole cloves
- 3 tablespoons of light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon of cinnamon powder
- A package of cheese cloth to help strain the apple mixture
Wash and cut your apples into eighths and cut the orange into fourths. It’s fine to keep the skin on both fruits as you will be boiling, straining, and discarding them . Put all of your sliced apples, apple cores, and orange into a large pot. Continue adding all spice, 5 cinnamon sticks, cloves, maple syrup, and the water into the pot.
With all of your ingredients together, place a lid on your pot and bring it to a boil for an hour. Then, reduce the heat and let it simmer for two more hours.
Once your apple cider is ready, use a potato masher to smash the ingredients in the pot. Using a second large pot, place your strainer over it and pour your now apple sauce-like mixture into the strainer. Rinse out your first large pot and place the cheese cloth over the face of it. This is when an extra set of hands is helpful! Re-strain the cider over the cloth to remove any large chunks that may have escaped. No one likes chunky cider! Repeat this process until you get the desired cider texture.
That’s it! Now you have approximately one gallon of apple cider to enjoy together. For the final touch, combine the cinnamon and the brown sugar on a plate. Depending on what temperature you enjoy your cider, wet the rim of your two glasses or mugs and dip them into the sugary mixture. Pour the cider, drop in cinnamon stick, and enjoy together!
