Time Capsule Date Night – With Free Downloadable Templates

DIY date night ideas: Time capsule with questions and free PDF templates

Time capsules are a fun community, school, or family activity. But they also make a really fun date night activity. Who doesn’t like dreaming and reminiscing together? It’s also a simple and easy idea that costs $5 or less to make, and can be made any time of the year. It’s fun to create together and even more fun to open at a later date.

 


What you’ll need

  • DIY date night ideas: Time capsule with questions and free PDF templates1 mason jar with lid (we recommend a wide rim so it’s easier to fit your hands inside)
  • 2 pens
  • 1 printed photo of the two of you from this year
  • Front page of today’s newspaper
  • Print the Date Night Time Capsule PDF template. It includes:
    • “Don’t Open Until…” Label
    • Goals and Predictions Guide
    • This Year’s Events Guide
    • 2 Letterheads

 


Instructions

  1. DIY date night ideas: Time capsule with questions and free PDF templatesDownload the Date Night Time Capsule PDF.
  2. Choose a date to open and write it on the label. Then tape the label inside the mason jar with the label facing out so you can read the date. This prevents any future weather or other wear to the label.
  3. Fill out the “Goals and Predictions Guide”, fold and place in the mason jar. Or answer these questions on a piece of paper:
    • We would like to learn…
    • We would like to live…
    • We would like to travel to…
    • We want to change…
    • Milestones we’d like to reach…
  4. Fill out the “This Year’s Events Guide”, and fold and place in the mason jar. Or answer these questions on a piece of paper:
    • We traveled to…
    • We learned…
    • Our favorite songs are…
    • Our favorite books are…
    • Our favorite tv shows are…
    • Our favorite movies are…
    • Our favorite restaurant is…
    • Our favorite free time activity is…
    • Our hardest moment was…
    • Our favorite memory is…
  5. Write letters to each other, fold, and place in the mason jar.
  6. Add the printed photo of the two of you from this year and place it in the mason jar.
  7. Take the front page of the newspaper, fold it so it will fit, and place it in the mason jar.
  8. Hide your time capsule in a safe place and open on your agreed date!

  1. Cool idea! I make photo albums for my wife of the past year on our dating anniversary, but it doesn’t include things like goals, aspirations, and/or predictions for the future. I think that’s part of the charm of the time capsule. More than seeing old photos, it’s about what our younger selves imagined for our future, which can be funny.

    • That photo album idea is neat! But yes, the added predictions makes it interesting. We can’t wait to open ours and so how close or far off we are.
