Romantic Scavenger Hunt Date Night

I’m sure you’ve done tons of scavenger hunts in your day, collecting random items with a group of friends for a probably not-so-great prize. When doing a scavenger hunt for our own date night, a lot of the items on lists we found seemed random. What did light bulbs and an old newspapers have to do with date night any way? So as we do here at Tonight’s Better Together, we came up with our own fun, creative list that’s romantic and perfect for date night. Scavenger Hunt Instructions: Below is a list of items to find. You can find these items in your neighborhood, the mall, the grocery store and your own home. The sky’s the limit! You can also download the PDF for easy traveling and checking off your found items. It’s fun to come together and see what each of you has come up with and it’s also fun to go on the adventure together. That’s why some items on this list you will need to split up for and others you …

Hammock Date Night

Summer Date Ideas: Hammock Together

While fold out chairs have been the gold standard for enjoying sunny summer days, the hammock is the completely underrated runner up. We thought investing in a hammock would add some flavor to our summer days and we were instantly overjoyed when we were right. While you’re sitting atop a heap of metal and plastic, you could be gently swaying in the wind between two trees strengthened by time and patience. Okay, I get that my description is a little too picturesque but hammocks are just better. One fateful summer evening, we decided to head down to India Point Park in Providence, RI. The temperature was in the mid 80’s and was dropping as the sun was dipping lower in the sky. We found a spot between two trees with sufficient strength atop a small null in the middle of the park. It was the perfect spot to either watch the walkers go by or see what the local fishermen were pulling in. It was made all the better by snuggling with my wife and …

Flintlock Trail, Rhode Island hiking

The Man Approved Outdoor Date Idea: Flintlock Trail, RI

It is the beginning of summer and we were asking ourselves, “What can we do outside for a date?” True to our form, we decided on a hike that we could involve our pup on. We love to hike as many people do, but we are not intense about it. We wanted something that would be challenging but have some gorgeous scenery, and most of all, secluded time to spend with each other. The fore-mentioned criteria led us to the Flintlock Trail in West Greenwich, RI. Before you decide to go romping through the woods of Rhode Island, I must warn you. Make sure you have drenched yourself in tick repellent as well as given your pet the proper preventative measures. Due to the incredibly warm winter we have had (thanks global warming), the tick population has boomed and so please plan accordingly. We want you to have the best experience possible. With that out of the way, we can start talking about much more interesting hiking topics rather than parasites. Flintlock Trail is nestled …

Budget Date Night Ideas - Do a puzzle together

Budget Friendly Date Night Ideas: Pizza and Puzzles

Before we go into our usual talk about a fun date night idea that you and your’s should add to your arsenal, I would like to point out the accomplishment of getting two words with double “Z”s into the title. Just saying… All kidding aside, my wife and I wanted to do something fun and different but not break the bank. We pondered about what might be fun, but also allow us to spend quality time with each other. The idea struck me and it seemed so obvious after that point. Let’s do a puzzle! Generally speaking, I had not done a puzzle since I was much younger and even then, it seemed like something I did when it was cold outside or camping in the woods with no television. But in all reality, doing a puzzle with your significant other is a great time to communicate and relax. Especially if you are taking on a 1,000 piece puzzle, you will undoubtedly need to talk about the pieces you are finding, if nothing else. The …

Fun Date Night In: "Chopped" at Home

Fun Date Night In: “Chopped” at Home

There are some nights that you just want to do something completely out of the box and have a lot of creative fun. We recently got on a cooking kick and along with some cooking documentaries, we also started watching “Chopped”. For those who have never seen the show, it’s an intense competition between chefs of all kinds of backgrounds given odd ingredient combinations and a time limit. We thought, how much fun would it be to actually have a “Chopped” date night? We set off to the store, got our ingredients and cooked up something that definitely would have never even crossed our minds. After judging our cooked results, we decided that if we were on the show, we would have been “Chopped”! After a fun night of creativity, tons of laughs and a couple of faux pas, we came to the conclusion that this was one of our favorite date nights and had to share the idea with you! Instructions: To start, you can either 1) download and print our shopping list for …

Winter Date Ideas: Game Night with Specialty Cocktails

One of our favorite parts of blogging is meeting the amazing, supportive, talented people of the blogosphere and Sofia Clara is nothing short of that. We met Sofia on Instagram of all places and our blogging relationship grew from there. Sofia is based out of Switzerland and has a beautiful blog on all things DIY, recipes, fashion and everyday life tips. My personal favorite posts are her Ikea hacks – nothing short of clever and beautiful. We hope you enjoy today’s guest blogger and definitely go check out her blog.     I don’t know about you, but the short days and grey weather during the wintertime have a big impact on me. I’m a big homebody and even more so during the winter months, but this month I really started missing those more spontaneous summer dates where you can just throw on a summer dress and head out for a drink or a walk by the lake (I live in Lausanne, right by one of Europe’s biggest lakes). I thought it would be fun …

Free date night ideas: camping indoors

Free Date Night Ideas: Camping Indoors

With the winter holidays fresh in our memories, we’ve been searching for fun date night ideas. If your wallets are a little lighter than normal due to the holidays, we understand you. With that in mind, we wanted to factor both the winter season and our budget into this date idea. We landed on camping indoors because who doesn’t like to build a tent out of blankets? It’s not just for kids anymore my friends. I’m sure most can agree it’s good to mix things up every once in a while, so why not do that with your house? Now you can go the whole nine yards and pull out the sleeping bags, assemble the tent in the house and drag out camping equipment but let’s face it, you are at home and camping can be so much more comfortable. We drug our mattress out of the bedroom and laid it in the middle of our apartment, spread all of our blankets around, hung some of our Christmas lights up to create that “starry night” …

Free date night ideas: how to plan the perfect night in

Free Date Night Ideas: How to Plan a Perfect Night In

Sometimes finding time for a date night can be harder than planning one. With kids, on top of career, on top of daily tasks, date night can grow further and further away from the reality of actually happening. If you don’t have kids, the financial strain can bring fun nights out to a screeching halt. Even living in New England can put a damper on going out. Last year, we got snowed in 5 times on scheduled date nights. To make it even funnier, we’ve had this article on the schedule for a year now to be released this Sunday, and what would you know, there was a snow storm last night. To say the least, we’ve had to learn how to get creative with date nights. In general, having a special night out with your spouse can become stressful. Who has time to get dressed up and find a babysitter anyway? But the beauty of kids is that they have a bed time. And with the comfort of home, you have everything you need for …

Fall Date Ideas: Apple Picking

Fall Date Ideas: Apple Picking

It’s that time of the year again! After a sweltering summer, it’s finally here. Sweater weather, apple cider and colorful foliage – hello fall! Apple picking is a must when it comes to fall activities and is also a great idea for a day date. It’s a little different than your typical go-out-for-dinner-date as it’s a fun outdoor activity together before the winter months settle in. You can also continue the date fun by making apple pies together after the picking has been done. Although we experienced our first fall in New England last year, we never actually made time to go apple picking. Boy, was that a mistake. Now that we know what to expect this year, we put apple picking on the top of our list. After much research and a valued recommendation from a local Rhody friend, we ended up driving out to Aquidneck Island to pick apples at Rocky Brook Orchard in Middleton, RI. Rocky Brook Orchard is a family run farm and specializes in the largest collection of apples types …

Farewell Summer: Beavertail State Park Trail

We’ve gotten a boatload of recommendations from both our readers and Instagram followers to go hike the Beavertail Trail at the Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown, RI. And we are so thankful for those recommendations because well, we’re now writing about our trip. It was that amazing! We are officially convinced that the Beavertail Trail is one of Rhode Island’s best kept secrets. Sorry Rhode Island if we’re outing you, but it’s too good not to share. We’ve had bad experiences with beaches out here. From the amount you have to pay to congested roads with license plates from all over New England all the way down to New Jersey to the non-existence of available parking. Yes I know, spoiled rotten Californian you say. But seriously, beach going is supposed to be fun and relaxing and my anxiety hits the roof anytime anyone mentions East Coast beaches in general. Beavertail, though not a long stretch of sandy beach, has large rocks to set up chairs on, grass areas for family picnics and yes, even small coves …

Free Things to do in Providence: Movies on the Block

With Eric back in school full time pursuing his MBA, we’ve had to get clever when it comes to budgeting for dates. So when we found out we could watch classic movie favorites in the beautiful and historic Downcity Providence under the stars, we immediately jumped at the idea. Especially when we could get out of our stifling apartment on a nice summer night. Who knew New England could be so hot?! But first a little background on what we found out about Movies on the Block: Apparently they’ve been putting on movies for the community for the last nine years. They’re located on Grant’s Block, right off of Westminster Street and they start in the beginning of June and run all the way through the last of September. They play an array of classic movies from old black and whites to newer films like Gangs of New York. This year’s line up includes Jaws, Groundhog Day, The Shinning, Dracula and Who Framed Rodger Rabbit. These are just a few that caught our eye, but …

Date Adventure: Ben Utter Trail to Stepstone Falls

The Ben Utter Trail to Step Stone Fall’s has to be one of our top ten favorite hikes and we’ve done a lot of hiking from Washington down to California. This isn’t on our list of challenging hikes as it’s mostly flat terrain, well marked trails and a short distance of three miles. But what it lacks in challenge, it makes up for in scenery with its luscious greenery, pretty foot bridges and lots of water. It’s the perfect summer leisure hike for a fun day date, and from what we’ve heard, is worth the visit during spring and fall as well. One disclaimer we will say is that it is very hard to find. Yelp is our usual source of information and recommendations, however Yelp’s address was completely off this time. It led us to an empty field featuring no waterfalls nor trails. We found another website that led us to Purgatory Road half a mile down Ten Rod Road to a golf resort. We should have known anything with purgatory in the name …

Waterfire Providence RI Summer Event

Waterfire & Superlative Sandwiches

As summer begins to heat up, so does Providence – particularly the Providence River. Every Rhode Islander is well familiar with the phenomenon of WaterFire. If you’re not, here’s the quick and dirty breakdown. On most Saturdays beginning in mid May until the first week of October, local business in Providence come together and host the lighting of over eighty floating braziers from Waterplace Park to Memorial/South Main Street Park right at sunset. Foreigners flock, avid instagramers snap furiously and locals and tourists alike rush to the walls and bridges over the water to watch the sun set in downtown Providence and enjoy a multitude of floating bonfires. This beautiful demonstration exemplifies the quirky individuality that makes Providence the city we’ve learned to love in the past year of adventure here. It just so happened to be one of our first larger events we went to when we first moved to Rhode Island. I come from San Diego, a big shiny city (quite literally due to the amount of sunshine we get) where large monopoly businesses are king and …

East Bay Bike Path

Bikes and Ice Cream

If you’re the active couple and are looking for something fun and sweet (no pun intended), the East Bay Bike Path just might be the perfect activity for you. With 14.5 miles of safe and unobstructed pedaling through coves, marshes and beautiful Rhode Island state parks, it’s the perfect romantic getaway for the day (not to mention, budget friendly!). If 14.5 miles seems to be a bit much, don’t sweat it! You can choose any pretty spot along this path to eat lunch, enjoy each other’s company and admire the breathtaking views. If you don’t live in the Rhode Island area, you can also easily adapt this idea for bike paths closest to you. To make this date is a success, we highly recommend prepping beforehand, as you’ll be outdoors for a few hours. 1) Pump up the tires of your bikes! Who wants unnecessary huffing and puffing! 2) Bring enough water bottles for the two of you. There is also a Shaw’s viewable from the Bike path on the right side (heading in the …
