Date Night Worthy Recipe: Dairy-Free 2-Ingredient Banana Ice Cream

This post comes on the heels of another creation by our resident Tonight’s Better Together Chef, Joe Choi. He brought you an amazing chocolate chip cookie recipe previously and now he’s come to finish the job by helping turn those cookies into ice cream cookie sandwiches! If you’re not quite sure about dairy free ice cream, get ready to have your mind blown.    Banana ice cream is exactly what it sounds like. It’s ice cream that is solely made up of bananas. This is a relatively easy ice cream to make and it is dairy-free, which means this will be delicious for everyone. Basically you want to take some ripe bananas, but not banana bread ripe, and peel and slice them into medallions. Next, spread them out on a tray and place them in the freezer for 15-25 minutes or until they are solid yet pliable, not frozen solid. Then you’ll want to use a food processor and blitz all the banana medallions until it starts to become smooth. Sometimes I will add a …

Date Night Worthy Recipe: Chocolate Chip Blondies

We’ve got another post curated by our resident Tonight’s Better Together Chef, Joe Choi. He’s got a two part recipe offering  the best dang plain bondies or chocolate chip blondies that can be adapted into chocolate chip cookies for your consuming pleasure. Read on to see how he takes a simple recipe to the next level just in time for date night.   It just so happened that my lovely friends, Eric and Stacey, managed to stop by my little hometown of Spokane on their move back west. We decided to make the best of it and collaborated on a recipe together, in person for once. It was a hot and muggy afternoon so we figured what better way to enjoy a summer day than with fresh baked desserts and some ice cream. I was told they had already posted a phenomenal chocolate chip cookie recipe but I implored them to try my personal chocolate chip cookie recipe that could easily be converted into a blondie recipe. To top it off, a little non-dairy, peanut …

Valentine's Day ideas: Re-create your very first date night

Valentine’s Day Ideas: Re-Create Your First Date

Recreating your very first date night is the perfect date night for a special occasion, anniversary, or Valentine’s Day. Reminisce about funny memories, simpler times, memorable moments, and how far you’ve come over the years. Bring back those feelings of excitement – minus the awkwardness, uncertainty, and nervousness – and spend a night walking down memory lane together. Here are a few things to think about as you go about re-planning your first date night: What time of the day was it? Was it in the morning, afternoon, or night? Try to plan it around the same time. What were you wearing? How did you do your hair? Don’t do the ultimate tbt and bring back fashion that should remain in the past but do find something similar. Were you wearing a summer dress? Casual? Dressy? Where did you go? Plan ahead and make reservations. What did you do? Think back to every detail of that night and how you can replicate it. Were there flowers, chocolates, or other small gifts? What conversations did you …

Christmas Recipes: Grandma’s Gingerbread Cookies

The best part of marriage is creating Christmas traditions together. In a world of Christmas cookies, there are so many options to choose from. How can we possibly make a decision? We default to what we know and trust; family traditions. One of our favorite Christmas cookie recipes is my grandmother’s soft and chewy gingerbread cookies. It’s time to break out the Kitchenaid! Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F.  If you are using metal cookie sheets, line with parchment paper. A candy thermometer would be useful but we have never used one. Baking is all about the love, right? Ingredients: 1 cup dark molasses ½ cup light brown sugar ½ cup white granulated sugar 4 teaspoons ground ginger 4 teaspoons ground ,cinnamon ¾ tablespoon baking soda 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter at room temp (We’ve used salted butter with no problem) 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 6 cups sifted all-purpose flour Place the molasses, sugars, ginger and cinnamon in a double boiler over medium heat. We actually don’t own a double boiler so …

Sundae Football Date Night - Over 60 Ice Cream Topping Ideas

The Ultimate Sundae Football Date Night with Over 60 Ice Cream Topping Ideas

Sure the fall leaves are beautiful, the hot cider warms the soul and the apple cider donuts are deliciously delightful, but the best part of fall is football season! Football is a big deal in our house. Eric is from Washington so he’s a Seattle Seahawks fan and being from the golden state of California, I’m a 49er’s fan. We’re usually “that cute couple”. However, when a football game is on – especially when our teams are playing – we are (in the most loving way) a house divided. Some call it a rivalry, we call it flirting and team pride. So in celebration of fall and football season, we’ve come up with an awesome idea if you and your boo love football. Sweeten up your football date night with creative ice cream sundaes. It’s super simple and fun too! Choose any combination of the list of ice cream toppings below and enjoy with vanilla ice cream, your honey and football.  Remember to grab your toppings in your team’s colors and waffle cone bowls! Providence restaurant review Mills Tavern

Providence, RI Must Try Restaurants: Mill’s Tavern Review

Everyone has their favorite restaurants that have the dishes they crave month in and month out. We all have these go to spots that offer up good times and fond memories. You may even have a reoccurring date night specific restaurant list. While it is never a bad thing to be intentional about date nights, there is always some room for a little change. Sometimes we all want to feel a little fancy and treat ourselves to something nice. Mill’s Tavern in downtown Providence offers an inviting atmosphere with a seasonal menu that always impresses. One of the obvious things that makes this restaurant great for a special occasion is the atmosphere. Don’t let the word tavern deter you. It’s far from that. Huge windows that let in the evening light, beautiful stone and wood walls, and soft romantic lights really set the tone for the night. Not to mention valet and overwhelmingly great service make the night feel seamless, special and relaxed. We began our evening with wine and appetizers. Additionally, the cocktail list …

Providence RI Must Try Restaurants: Salted Slate Review

Providence, RI Must Try Restaurants: Salted Slate Review

We have walked by The Salted Slate countless times and have always been curious about the restaurant but for whatever reason, never actually went in. Finally, our friend Erika from iheartrhody.com highly recommended it so we decided to give it a try. Let me start off by saying that this restaurant is an under-rated, under-stated gem of Wayland Square in Providence. The food here rivals some of the best restaurants of Boston, without the attitude. The atmosphere is relaxed, dimly lit with an urban, contemporary feel. Think cool hanging lights, wood, brick and metals. The wait staff is relaxed, friendly and timely and the parking is a snap.  The presentation of the food is one of my favorite aspects of this restaurant. Most of everything is served on a salted slate, literally. Fun, black, flat slates are placed before you with chunks of delicious sea salt sprinkled on and around the food. For the quality of food, you would expect small portions, but this was not the case. The slates and plates were generously filled …

Fun Date Night In: "Chopped" at Home

Fun Date Night In: “Chopped” at Home

There are some nights that you just want to do something completely out of the box and have a lot of creative fun. We recently got on a cooking kick and along with some cooking documentaries, we also started watching “Chopped”. For those who have never seen the show, it’s an intense competition between chefs of all kinds of backgrounds given odd ingredient combinations and a time limit. We thought, how much fun would it be to actually have a “Chopped” date night? We set off to the store, got our ingredients and cooked up something that definitely would have never even crossed our minds. After judging our cooked results, we decided that if we were on the show, we would have been “Chopped”! After a fun night of creativity, tons of laughs and a couple of faux pas, we came to the conclusion that this was one of our favorite date nights and had to share the idea with you! Instructions: To start, you can either 1) download and print our shopping list for …

Free date night ideas: camping indoors

Free Date Night Ideas: Camping Indoors

With the winter holidays fresh in our memories, we’ve been searching for fun date night ideas. If your wallets are a little lighter than normal due to the holidays, we understand you. With that in mind, we wanted to factor both the winter season and our budget into this date idea. We landed on camping indoors because who doesn’t like to build a tent out of blankets? It’s not just for kids anymore my friends. I’m sure most can agree it’s good to mix things up every once in a while, so why not do that with your house? Now you can go the whole nine yards and pull out the sleeping bags, assemble the tent in the house and drag out camping equipment but let’s face it, you are at home and camping can be so much more comfortable. We drug our mattress out of the bedroom and laid it in the middle of our apartment, spread all of our blankets around, hung some of our Christmas lights up to create that “starry night” …

White Chocolate Chip Cranberry Soft Baked Cookies

White Chocolate Chip Cranberry Soft Baked Cookies

As Christmas approaches, we love to get into the kitchen and bake. Not only do we send care packages of baked goods to our family but we also love being in the kitchen together. There’s something fun about getting your hands into the dough, getting flower everywhere and oh yeah – the pay off of yummy, chewy, ooey, gooey Christmas cookies with your special someone. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the best baker in the world. I like to refer to myself as a cook versus a baker. The reaction of flower with cornstarch, baking soda, eggs and sugar remains a mysterious science to me. I’ve had some real accidents in the kitchen. For example, this year I decided I was going to take on a new recipe of peppermint bark. Easy, right? Wrong! I forgot to put the peppermint extract in the first batch of chocolate, so I added a little extra in the second batch of white chocolate and ended up with something that felt like the minty middle …

Peppermint Hot Chocolate and Marshmallow Recipe

The Peppermint Hot Chocolate & Marshmallow Recipe that Fixed Everything

Have you ever started your date night with an argument? And then as soon as you resolve your argument, you sit in an hours worth of traffic only to surround yourself with screaming children, trampling crowds and parking lot wars? Let us tell you about our failed date, how we learned to survive the night of catastrophe and a hot chocolate recipe that fixed it all. If you’re from Rhode Island or Southern Massachusetts, it’s almost a guarantee that La Salette is part of your Christmas tradition. With more than 400,000 Christmas lights, the La Salette Shrine in Attleboro, Massachusetts brings Christmas spirit to the southern New England area starting December 1st to January 1st every Saturday and Sunday. We thought it would be a peaceful moment to press pause on the holiday rush, enjoy the meaning of Christmas and savor a little time with each other. “Thought” would be the key word here. We were soon to be disappointed. With Eric back in school for his MBA and in the thick of finals, we …

The Butcher Shop Restaurant Review, Boston MA

Date Night at the Butcher Shop?

We did it again. We’ve headed back into Boston for another date night. This time was a little more low key than the last but after a long week, those are always welcome. For this date night, we headed to The Butcher Shop. No, we didn’t go to an actual butcher shop to purchase meat for a date night. 1) I definitely did not feel like cooking (did you not catch my mention of a long week?) and 2) staring at dead animals is not my idea of romantic. The Butcher Shop is actually a highly rated restaurant in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston. The food is a combo of French (my favorite) and Italian (my husbands favorite) so it was a perfect match for us. With the name The Butcher Shop, you can expect a lot of well cured, perfectly cut and cooked meat. It is not only a wine bar but also a fully functioning butcher shop. Have no fear though, the restaurant is artfully decorated with a slate wine bar and …

La Voile French Restaurant - Newbury Street, Boston

Date Night on Newbury Street, Boston

We finally spread our wings and made our way to the beautiful city of Boston for a date night. Although we love our little city of Providence, we wanted to do something with a different scene. We headed to Newbury Street for a night of exploring, roaming, sight seeing and ending the night with dinner and dessert at La Voile. One of the things that we don’t like about Boston is that parking is always a hassle: it costs too much, there’s never any street parking, or if there is street parking, there is a chance of getting a ticket. We know from experience unfortunately, as we’ve gotten many tickets in Boston. With this date we decided to try to centralize it into one area so we wouldn’t have to deal with the insanity of parking in Boston. Also, because we made such a long trek, we wanted to do something that was not just going to a restaurant but also seeing the sights and taking our time. Enter Newbury Street. Part of the Back Bay neighborhood, this …
